Background
The Environment is the most important resource for life and a clean environment is essential for healthy living. It helps make the world a beautiful place for one, and it makes individuals healthier when the environment around them is healthy. Our environment is responsible for plants, animals, food chains, water and much more. Therefore, we should keep our environment clean.
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism is coordinating this year’s National Clean Up and Anti-littering Campaign. On the 2ndof April, 2019, Honorable Pohamba Shifeta officially announced and declared the 21st of September 2019 as the designated date for this year’s National Clean-up Day. It is expectected that all Namibian citizens in all the regions should work hand in hand with their Local Authorities to come up with activities in preparation for this important day. The chosen date happens to be the World Clean Up Day and so it will be good to see Namibia stand out from this day onwards for the good of our health and as well as the environment.
The Clean Up and Anti-littering Campaign is aimed at changing the public behaviours (mindsets) of all citizens on matters related to littering, general hygiene and proper waste disposal management (Reducing, Re-using and Recycling). The Ministry’s objective for this campaign is to see a society where all citizens will become sensitive and mindful of littering and adopt best waste management practices through reducing,-re-using and recycling.
New Trash Tag School Challenge
In cohesion with the “National Clean up day”set up for the 21th of September and in order to create environmental awareness within the kids in Namibia; TOSCO Trust and PAKO Kids Magazine in collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and Tourism and Recycle Namibia Forum have teamed up to bring a new challenge called; the “before and after challenge” for all schools around Namibia.
The objective will be to encourage kids to get outside their schools between Monday 16th to 21th of September and help to clean up their surroundings. They will need to post pictures before and after the challenges with the hash tags #Trash Tag #Thefutureisnow #Namibiacleanup2019
The winning school will win a monetary price sponsored by First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) and others organizations and the participating learners will win a trip to an educational centre.
How the challenge works
The schools must fill up this registration form in order to participate to the Before / After Challenge. They will need to select an area or some areas to clean up.
Once the area to clean up is selected, the schools will need to take a picture of the area before the start of the challenge (landscape, trash etc) showing how dirty the area they have selected.
Once the challenge starts, the school will need to take some pictures of the kids cleaning up.
At least the schools will need to take some other pictures after the challenge ends. Showing how the landscape ends up after the cleaning and showing how many trash bags the kids collected.

REQUIREMENTS FROM PARTICIPATING SCHOOLS
The school should:
- Send us 10 pictures (before, during and after.) to TOSCO and PAKO’s email address for us to publish them on our social medias. (admin@tosco.org/ pako@africaonline.com.na)
- Schools can post them directly on their Facebook page and they will need to tag (@TOSCO and @PAKO) and use the #TrashTag #thefutureisnow #Namibiacleanup2019
- Schools can post them either on TOSCO or PAKO Facebook page using the tags and hashtags mentioned previously.
The dead line to send us or posting the pictures is Wednesday 25thof September until 17h00.
How can the school participate?
All participating schools are expected to fill up the registration form and submit before 1st September 2019 to com@tosco.org, pako@africaonline.com.na or hiskia.tyapa@met.gov.na.
To participate, the school need to have at least a group of minimum 10 students. Any age.
If the school has more than50 students willing to participate; then the school will need to make several groups. Each group must have minimum 10 students and maximum 50students.
The participating school will need to take 10 pictures in total: 3 pictures before the clean up challenge (to see how the area was dirty) 3 pictures during the challenges (with the kids cleaning up) 3 more pictures after the challenges ends (how the landscapes look like after the cleaning) and 1 more picture with the number of trash bags and the team.
How the winning school will be selected?
A school with more trash bags collected between Saturday 16thto 21thof September. That’s why it is really important to send us a picture with all the collected bags. The dead line to send us or posting the pictures is Wednesday 25thof September until 17h00.
The winner will be announced on the 30thof September.
The winner school will win a monetary price sponsored by First National Bank of Namibia (FNB) and others organizations. For the kids they will win a field trip to a education center in Namibia.
The winner kids group will win some goodies sponsored by Ministry of Environment and Tourism Namibia (MET).
Note: waste will be collected from all the schools, thanks to our partner Rent A Drum
